The Arizona Republican gubernatorial race is heating up and it's getting interesting as the following results of a brand-new poll showing Kari Lake with a commanding lead over other potential GOP primary challengers for a U.S. Senate seat currently held by former Democrat-turned-Independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema. Kari Lake who has “a commanding 26-point lead in the race for the Arizona Republican Party (AZGOP) nomination for U.S. Senate,” the Arizona Sun-Times reported on Thursday, citing a Noble Predictive Insights (NPI) poll.
The former Phoenix-area broadcaster had 40 percent support, followed by Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb with 14 percent, with a margin of error plus or minus 5.25 percent. “Former U.S. Senate candidate Blake Masters also received 10 percent of support, but he has since declared he will instead mount a campaign for the House seat being vacated by Rep. Debbie Lesko (R-AZ-08) at the end of her term. NPI founder Mike Noble noted Masters’ decision, and stated that ‘Lake is likely to benefit the most’ from his share of the vote,” the Sun-Times noted further. “An additional 4 percent of respondents said they would vote for businessman Brian Wright, while 33 percent said they were undecided,” the outlet added.
Also it looks like Lake has picked up a big endorsement as according to Fox News, Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), has come out in support of Lake, who will attempt to turn at least one of Arizona’s two Senate seats red again after both went blue over the past two election cycles. Sinema won her seat in 2018, defeating Martha McSally, and last year, incumbent Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly handily fended off Trump-backed Masters 51.4 percent to 46.5 percent. “Joe Biden’s policies have crushed Arizona. Arizonans are dealing with record inflation – up 20 percent under the Biden administration. Arizona is also on the front lines of the worst illegal immigration crisis in American history. Nearly 8 million illegal immigrants under Biden, equal to the population of Arizona,” Barrasso said in a statement, per Fox News. “The U.S. Senate needs a Senator from Arizona that understands these issues, and will fight hard to solve them.”
Lake said In a statement to the outlet, that she was “honored by the friendship and endorsement.” “[Barrasso] is a tested and proven conservative leader who I greatly admire. I look forward to working with Senator Barrasso to get America back on track and fire Chuck Schumer,” she noted further. Lake received the endorsement of former President Donald Trump amid her campaign launch last Tuesday, but Barrasso’s endorsement marks a major milestone as she has sought to build a bridge to establishment Republicans in an effort to coalesce support for what could be one of the most contentious races in 2024. Ahead of her endorsement, Lake spent time meeting with various senators on Capitol Hill, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and hardly mentioned election fraud in her announcement speech despite it being central to her political persona following her loss in the Arizona gubernatorial election last year.
Lake currently has only one major opponent in the race for the Republican nomination: Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb. The winner will likely face Phoenix-area Democrat Rep. Ruben Gallego, the favorite to win his party’s nomination. Sinema has yet to announce whether she’ll run for reelection, but if she does, it’ll be a three-way race that Democrats are not anxious to see between Sinema, Democratic Rep. Reuben Gallego, and whoever wins the GOP nomination. It presents a unique situation in a new battleground state that has been red for years but is trending blue. “Some Arizona Democrats expect Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) will support Gallego, even if behind the scenes, noting the animosity many in the party feel toward Sinema, especially after she switched to an independent last year, and her electoral prospects,” The Hill reported. “But other members of the party believe that calculus is not as simple and say Senate Democrats will need to proceed cautiously, given she still caucuses with the party in the upper chamber, where Democrats have a narrow majority,” the outlet said.

Laughton turned herself in to police on March 12, 2015, after a warrant for her arrest was issued stemming from a bomb threat phoned in to Southern New Hampshire Medical Center on February 27. She was initially charged with making a false report of explosives. A judge reduced the charge to a misdemeanor and sentenced her to a six-month suspended jail term.

Stacie Laughton is facing federal charges of sexual exploitation of children and aiding and abetting. According to the complaint, Laughton originally told investigators that she coaxed Lindsay Groves into taking pornographic pictures of male and female children at a day care where Groves worked at the time. But federal officials said it went beyond that. "Laughton and Groves were involved in an intimate relationship in which they discussed their sexual attraction to and potential sexual involvement with children," investigators said in the complaint.

Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee.

The committee said it had received a referral from the Office of Congressional Ethics, a separate office that reviews misconduct allegations, on June 23. That means a majority of that body decided the matter was substantial enough to refer to the committee, which is chaired by Democratic Rep. Susan Wild of Pennsylvania.
They committee said the disclosure of the investigation was mandated by the panel's decision to extend the amount of time it's investigating the matter. It added that it had not made a judgement on whether an ethics violation had occurred. It also said it would "announce its course of action in this matter" next year after the 118th Congress convened.
The committee did not indicate why the congresswoman was under investigation, and in a statement to Insider, Lauren Hitt, her spokesperson, did not offer further details.
"The Congresswoman has always taken ethics incredibly seriously, refusing any donations from lobbyists, corporations, or other special interests," Hitt said. "We are confident that this matter will be dismissed."
It's possible that the investigation was spurred by a September 2021 complaint from the conservative American Accountability Foundation accusing the congresswoman of accepting an impermissible gift by attending the 2021 Met Gala, where the cost of attendance for many guests is $35,000. Ocasio-Cortez was invited to the event as a guest of the Met and did not pay for her ticket.
The congresswoman notably wore a dress emblazoned with "TAX THE RICH" at the event. She was not permitted to keep the dress, Hitt told PolitiFact last year. Ocasio-Cortez has said she attended the event in her official capacity as a member of Congress and that lawmakers from New York were routinely invited. Rep. Carolyn Maloney, a fellow New York Democrat, has attended multiple Met Galas, and the Office of Congressional Ethics recently opened an investigation into whether Maloney solicited a ticket to the event in 2016. House rules state that members may not accept gifts, except under exemptions for widely attended events or charity functions.
The conservative group said Ocasio-Cortez's attendance violated those rules because the event was exclusive and run by Condé Nast, a for-profit media company.

FBI stopped a plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer
At least six men have been charged in a federal case in Michigan tied to a plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. The alleged plot involved reaching out to members of a Michigan militia to “violently overthrow the government,” The Detroit News reports.

A group of men have been charged in connection to what the FBI said was a militia plot to overthrow the government of Michigan by kidnapping Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
A federal affidavit made public on Thursday revealed that the FBI had reached out to several members of a militia and discovered the plot to kidnap Whitmer, a Democrat who has outraged some right-wing activists with her strict coronavirus protocols. The FBI found that the militia was trying to grow to be able to carry out the plot.
“Several members talked about murdering ‘tyrants’ or ‘taking’ a sitting governor,” the FBI affidavit stated. “The group decided they needed to increase their numbers and encouraged each other to talk to their neighbors and spread their message.”
The FBI identified at least six suspects tied to the plot, including 24-year-old Ty Garbin, whose home in Hartland Township was raided by the FBI on Wednesday. The other suspects included in the affidavit are Adam Fox, Barry Croft, Kaleb Franks, Daniel Harris, and Brandon Caserta. They were charged in the alleged plot and face up to life in prison if they are convicted. The bureau said that in early 2020, it became aware through social media that “a group of individuals were discussing the violent overthrow of certain government and law-enforcement components” and that Fox and Croft “agreed to unite others in their cause and take violent action against multiple state governments that they believe are violating the U.S. Constitution.” At least 15 men, including Fox and Croft, attended a militia meeting near Columbus, Ohio, earlier this year. A paid FBI informant attended the meeting and turned over evidence to authorities. That informant and other militia members were already on the FBI’s radar as the agency investigated threats against local law enforcement officers.
“The group talked about creating a society that followed the U.S. Bill of Rights and where they could be self-sufficient,” the FBI agent wrote of the meeting. “They discussed different ways of achieving this goal from peaceful endeavors to violent actions. At one point, several members talked about state governments they believed were violating the U.S. Constitution, including the government of Michigan and Governor Gretchen Whitmer.”
“As part of that recruitment effort, Fox reached out to a Michigan-based militia group,” the FBI wrote. “At the time, the FBI interviewed a member of the militia group who was concerned about the group’s plans to target and kill police officers, and that person agreed to become a (confidential source).” At the meeting, Fox referred to Whitmer as “this tyrant b—-” and asked the group to come up with ideas on how to get to her. The FBI source said, and the bureau confirmed, that the militia group “periodically meets for field training exercises on private property in remote areas of Michigan, where they engage in firearms training and tactical drills.”
The FBI informant attended and recorded other meetings and calls, including one in June in which Fox said he needed “200 men” to storm the Capitol building in Lansing, Michigan, and take hostages, including Whitmer. Fox said they would try Whitmer for “treason” and would conduct the alleged operation before the November election.
During a Thursday press conference, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said that seven more men linked to the “Wolverine Watchmen” militia group had been arrested and charged with state-level charges under Michigan’s anti-terrorism act on top of the federal charges. Pete Musico and Joseph Morrison were charged with making terrorist threats, gang membership, providing material support for terrorist acts, and felony firearm possession. Paul Beller was charged with providing material support for terrorist acts, gang membership, and possessing a firearm during the commission of a felony. Shawn Fix, Eric Mallator, Michael Noll, and William Noll were charged with terrorist support provision and felony firearm possession.
“The individuals in custody are suspected to have attempted to identify the home addresses of law enforcement officers in order to target them, made threats of violence, intended to instigate a civil war, and engaged in planning and training for an operation to attack the Capitol building of Michigan and to kidnap government officials, including the governor of Michigan,” Nessel said. “It’s important to note that these charges are subject to change after a complete review of the evidence obtained last night and may differ with those charged at the federal level.”
U.S. Attorney for Eastern Michigan Matthew Schneider said that “all of us in Michigan can disagree about politics, but those disagreements should never, ever amount to violence.” U.S. Attorney for Western Michigan Andrew Birge appeared to the leave the door open for additional charges, saying that “the investigation remained ongoing.”
Whitmer held a press conference of her own Thursday afternoon, blaming President Trump for “stoking distrust” and fomenting anger” during the coronavirus pandemic.
Acting Homeland Security Director Chad Wolf wrote in a threat assessment released this week that “ideologically-motivated lone offenders and small groups pose the most likely terrorist threat to the Homeland, with Domestic Violent Extremists presenting the most persistent and lethal threat.” Last month, FBI Director Christopher Wray testified to the House: “We don’t really think of threats in terms of left and right at the FBI. We’re focused on the violence, not the ideology. Our domestic violent extremists include everything from racially motivated violent extremists … all the way to anti-government and anti-authority violent extremists — and that includes people from ranging from anarchist violent extremists, people who subscribe to antifa and other ideologies, as well as militia types.”
Whitmer has been increasing her own personal security protocols since the beginning of the pandemic, including adding an 8-foot security wall around the governor’s mansion in September. The Michigan Supreme Court ruled on Friday that the 1945 law Whitmer had been relying upon to impose sweeping restrictions to limit the spread of the coronavirus was unconstitutional, and Nessel said she would no longer enforce Whitmer’s executive orders through criminal prosecution.
